Noor and Sally at Ripley's Aquarium

Noor and Sally at Ripley's Aquarium

We brought one refugee family to Canada. Now we want to continue these efforts and keep changing loves. Won't you join us?

On rare occasions an image comes along that shows an uncompromising light on a crucial issue. An image that transcends borders, has a profound impact, and makes it impossible to look away. For North America, it was the image of three-year-old Alan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkish beach.

That photo made the crisis impossible to ignore any longer. We knew we had to do something, because we know that if we aren't part of the solution we are part of the problem.  And so 'Westside Refugee Response' was born, a coming together of like-minded friends and friends of friends in Toronto's west end, united by a desire to make a difference by sponsoring a refugee family and be part of another Canadian success story.

And so we sponsored a Syrian refugee family with the help of Ryerson Lifeline Syria and dozens of donors just like you, we raised enough money and brought Amir, Noor, and their 2-year-old daughter Sally, with whom we were matched sight unseen, to Toronto. They arrived on July 14, 2016. We are helping them settle into the city, learn the ropes, get accustomed to Canadian culture, and find jobs (well, just the parents. Sally is freeloading). Having never met them we had no idea what to expect, and we are so thrilled to report that they are the kindest, warmest people we could have hoped to receive.

And now we want to help more people. Noor's sister M and her husband G are currently living in the UAE but their situation is very bad and we need to get them to Canada as soon as possible. If we aren't able to help, they will soon be expelled from the UAE, and they don't have anywhere else to go. Read more about M and G here.  So, we need to act quickly.

We have created a new fundraiser featuring some incredible rewards and incentives. Please give generously.

Your donations will be used to bring M and G to Toronto and to pay for rent, clothing, food, and everything else required to settle in and start a life in a new country.

Please donate here:

Please be aware that we are not a registered charity (that process could take years) and cannot offer you a tax receipt. (You're doing this for the pleasure of saving two lives anyway.)

We thank you for your generosity!!
